For the first time it was held in the fantastic surrounds of the Medieval Museum in Waterford’s Viking Triangle.

The standard and quality of the applicants was exceptional – from all five counties – and made it a difficult job to shortlist to three. Three startup companies, FineDeeds (Tipperary), hconnect (Wexford) and SmartXAssistant (Wexford) then pitched in front of our judges and a packed audience in the Garden Room in the museum in the centre of Waterford City.

Judges were Keith Brock from Enterprise Ireland, Niamh Sterling from HBAN (Halo Business Angel Network) Niall McEvoy from Elkstone and Jacqui Gaule from Waterford LEO, representing the Local Enterprise Office in Carlow, Kilkenny, Waterford and Wexford who sponsored the competition.
Three fantastic pitches along with a lively Q&A from the Judges resulted in the prize of €5000 going to David Ganly, CEO of hconnect. hconnect is an integration Platform as a Service for the hospitality industry. Designed to help hoteliers make it easier and more affordable to exchange data between their hotel systems, all through an intuitive self-service portal, while tackling industry integration problems such as excessive fees and legacy on premise technology.

Whilst the judges were away making their difficult decision, Barry Downes, of Sure Valley Ventures was in conversation with Aidan Shine, demystifying the seed and investment process for start-ups.

South East BIC works with innovative entrepreneurs and teams through specialised business consultancy services with specific emphasis on investor readiness. “Preparation for raising investment and the actual investor pitch are key elements of what we do. The Big Pitch highlights the work that start-ups have to put in order to attract the right attention from the right investor at the right time. Hosting the Big Pitch in person this year gave start-ups and scaleups a great opportunity to pitch and to network with key stakeholders and funders,” said Aidan Shine, CEO South East BIC.
